Adult ESOL Literacy Courses

MCLaSS English Language courses are for refugees and migrant resettling in New Zealand. The courses are 3 hours per weekday. Courses are offered in central Wellington and Newtown.

The Tertiary Education Commission contracts MCLaSS to offer free classes. MCLaSS asks for information about an adult's eligibility before arranging a placement interview {view details).

The courses offered:
2 Absolute beginner English language and literacy classes for adults who are not literate in their first language.
2 Beginner English language and literacy.
1 Post-beginner and pre-intermediate English language and literacy.

Job Brokering and Career Coaching

These services are for refugee and migrant job seekers whose first language is not English. Priority is given to adults referred by Work & Income. MCLaSS has a team of four half-time staff who specialise as follows:

1 Fiona Hoang and Harvey Buchman help skilled migrants find employment, 384-3694 ext 204
1 Marlene Strickland helps refugees and unqualified migrants find work, 384-3694 ext 206

Mother Tongue Maintenance

MCLaSS recognizes the importance of mother tongue or first language maintenance and is committed to its development and promotion.

Most mother tongue classes depend on volunteer teachers and administrators. These classes reinforce mother tongue learning in the family environment. MCLaSS promotes wider recognition of the importance of mother tongue maintenance. MCLaSS has built working relationships with the Office of Ethnic Affairs, Ministries and other bodies to highlight the importance of ethnic community efforts to maintain their mother tongue.
